In person once again for the first time in two years, your ADHA Board of Trustees (BOT) completed a celebratory and productive three-day gathering in Rosemont, Illinois. Joined by ADHA staff and supporting consultants in various areas of expertise, the BOT rolled up their sleeves and got to work! Here are some highlights and key takeaways.

Advancing Understanding. Committing to Action.

On Friday, October 22, the Board received the latest report from the House of Delegates Taskforce on Pathways to ADHA Board leadership on its continuing work to create a national governance structure that supports achievement of ADHA’s strategic plan to ensure an inclusive, decisive, competent, and balanced national dental hygiene leadership team. The Board also participated in a retreat on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. This session presented a rich opportunity to learn, share and collaborate on how ADHA can advance its commitment to health equity and belonging.

Steeped in Strategy.

Saturday, October 23 was dedicated to the ADHA Strategic Plan and the work in progress across the following domains.

Community: the membership engagement team led the Board in a review of the upcoming subscription pilot (formerly referred to as the Membership Engagement Initiative).

Continuing Education: the Board reviewed status and plans for 2022 Annual Conference and CE Smart, a report of the outcomes of research collaborations with the American Dental Association Health Policy Institute and 2022 Leadership Development programing.

Advocacy: the Board discussed tactics and accomplishments including initiatives involving direct access and dental therapy legislation, improvements in the standard occupational classification, the continued work with the Coalition for Modernizing Dental Licensure (CMDL), and ADHA’s COVID-19 response.

Governance and Infrastructure: Lisa Moravec, RDH, MSDH, ADHA Immediate Past President, concluded the day with an overview of strategic decisions made by the BOT over the past decade and their impact on decision-making today.

Consequential Decision-Making.

On Sunday, October 24, the Board business meeting included a reaffirmation of fiduciary responsibilities, a performance review and discussion with ADHA’s CEO Ann Battrell, and consideration of committee reports and recommendations. Strategy and support materials for membership renewal and recruitment were also presented. The next Board of Trustees meeting will take place in November.
